Two penthouse floors have been added to this neoclassical building bestowing an element of height that the original failed to reacH, making for an impressive pairing when viewed alongside the similarly treated Sutherland House.
A conjoined commercial and residential pairing at Infiniti drags to completion under a prolonged gestation following a liability pass the parcel. Progressed to steelwork under a low grade 3DReid design prior to gm+ad coming on board. A fair commercial product now hides ugly residential sibling with a vacant expanse of zinc implying anticipation of a southern neighbour. Situated adjacent to Skypark.
Elder and Cannon's 220 Broomielaw is planned for the land adjacent. It's possible (just) that trams may operate along this stretch of riverfront connecting St Enoch's with Glasgow Harbour.
Completion date -June 2006 (Casino) / January 2007 (Etap)
Springfield Quay is significantly smaller than the above "regional" casinos and as such is inhibited by less regulation. Plans also incorporate bars, restaurants and a multi storey car park (underneath the hotel). Site will connect to Cheapside via a new pedestrian Footbridge.
Internally, a stepped street providing meeting areas will stretch the length of the building, sound sensitive studios are housed underneath. Site to be connected to North bank via Finnieston bridge. Initial designs from Mecanoo and Allan Murray excercised greater flair prior to BBC cost cutting.
Opinion
The BBC's architectural metamorphosis barely approaches decent with sheds and clutter littering the vicinity. Could plant have gone in a basement? Wouldn't titanium cladding gel with the rest of the complex? or indeed could some (any) attempt at visual interest have been made? We have a background building on a foreground site saved only by an expansive Escher-esque internal break out space.
